Al Qarah Mountain جَبَل ٱلْقَارَة is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Al Ahasa, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia (الأحساء، المنطقة الشرقية، السعودية). It is a unique and important landmark in the country, both geologically and culturally. A long time ago, the mountain was formed by natural forces including seismic activities, water erosion, and abrasion, making it the most beautiful natural phenomenon in Algara village. It is renowned for its outstanding networks of caves and passageways that both locals and tourists like to explore.
Another thing it is known for is that it has a microclimate inside its caves and passageway systems. The weather might be hot on the outside, but it is cool inside and warmer inside when it is cold outside. It is a good place to hang out that can shelter you from the summer heat, and as you know, the weather in summer can be intolerable.
The mountain stretches over 1.5 miles, which invites visitors to explore. Some of the most favorable places to venture through are the 28 narrow, towering caverns; Al Ahasa National Museum, Souq Al Qsidstiya, Jawatha Mosque, Al Ahasa Crafts Center for pottery, and traditional restaurants.
Al Qarah Mountain is located in the center of Al Garah village, Al Ahasa, Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It is 10-11 km northeast of the center of Al-Houfuf (the main city in Al-Ahasa). It is a rocky hill that stands at 75 m (246 ft). However, the highest point is around 205-210 m above sea level. You can hike to the summit to enjoy a beautiful view of farms and palm trees. It can surely take your breath away.
Al Qarah Mountain history is rich and interesting, which provokes the curiosity of both geologists and tourists alike. It is a geological formation of sedimentary rocks that were formed millions of years ago by weathering and erosion, giving it a taste of adventure, heritage, and natural beauty.
It is also an important landmark traditionally, culturally, and religiously, especially for locals. Not only that, but it has a gathering space where the community can host some weddings and community gatherings. In the past, kids were taught to read the Quran at the entrance of the cave, which is now known as the Land of Civilization.
Al Qarah Mountain has a mix of oasis and desert vegetation. The most dominant type of plant in the mountain is the palm tree. You can also find desert shrubs, grasses, and small herbs, acacia trees, and wildflowers. It is also rich in fauna as well, such as small desert birds (sparrows and larks), migratory birds, pigeons, and doves. You can also spot reptiles, such as lizards, geckos, and small desert snakes. There are also some insects roaming around the mountain, including ants, beetles, and moths. While exploring the caves and tunnels, be on the lookout for rodents and bats.
There are many reasons why you should visit Al Qarah Mountain, like its unique weather – cool in summer and warm in winter—exploring its natural maze of tunnels and passages, and exploring its nearby pottery that offers traditional crafts by local artisans. It is not a good place for claustrophobic people because it contains tight paths and open chambers. If you are not afraid of tight places, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is for you and your family to roam around and enjoy its natural beauty.
